Sobbing in the 70s: Idol Results Show leaves four more behind
From the opening moment’s moose signal, Thursday’s “American Idol” Results Show had all the makings of a very odd event.
A thumb-against-head posture that lead panelist Simon Cowell took many times during the Wednesday ladies competition was an oddity that spurred verbal jousts between show host Ryan Seacrest and Cowell.
Seacrest quickly change roles from quibbling co-worker to counselor, with a Top 16 Results Show that had enough tears to be mistaken for an Old Yeller rerun.
CRY, CRY, CRY
Alaina Whitaker, Jason Yeager, Robbie Carrico and Alexandréa Lushington had plenty to sob about when more than 31,000 call-in voters decided to send them packing
Few, including a cranky Cowell, weren’t surprised by Yeager’s exit, and Carrico wasn’t shocked by his dismissal.
“I made a bad song choice – and it costed me,” said the frizzy-haired 26-year-old from Melbourne, Fla.
Lushington’s response was mostly casual, except for an impulsive response to Seacrest.
“You were supposed to bring her (Lushington’s grandmother) to California, freak,” Lushington said, hoping that she would have advanced far enough for her visit Los Angeles. Seacrest instead promised to go see her.
A touching, unexpected moment was during the 17-year-old Georgia resident’s exit solo, when she noticed standout David Archuleta grieving. Lushington walked over to console him while in mid-song.
Whitaker, a 16-year-old from Tulsa, Okla., who gave eye-popping performances throughout the competition, stood beside Houston, Texas native Kady Malloy verdict on which female would be sent home. Malloy, who fumbled through her Wednesday routine, began to accept the dismissal news from Seacrest only to hear Whitaker’s name announced as the night’s last departing female.
Whitaker let out a sob after she heard the result.
“Sorry, this is so embarrassing,” she told Seacrest, who consoled her with a hug.
WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM FRIENDS
Stunned and dejected, Seacrest enlisted the other “Idol” female contestants to assist Whitaker though a final performance of “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” who eventually warmed to a vocal quality that helped vindicate her. Several contestants alternated between crying and wiping away tears.
“You are a gifted, bright young talent…This is the start of an amazing career from you,” said judge Paula Abdul, who gave Whitaker a standing ovation.
Whitaker’s plane ticket home Friday is one place where the moose call is appropriate.
The top 8 men will perform on Mar. 4, the top 8 ladies will sing on Mar. 5 and Results Night will be on Mar. 6. All shows start at 8 p.m. on Fox. Don’t miss it!
